You sure the switch on the lens was set to AF and not MF?

Go to your menu and go through all the Auto Focus settings. You may have it turned off somewhere in the settings. New cameras take a bit getting used to. I have a 3100 and have no problem with it. Read the manual. It really does help, and if you don't understand something, just come to the forum and ask. Hope this helps

Are you using a DX lens ? older Nikon lenses don't AF with some of the newer bodies due to the AF motor being in the lens on the DX series lenses.

thank you everybody for the replies. both of my lens were on auto-focus and neither worked. a nikon service rep went through the cameras menu with me. it is a problem with the contacts between the camera body and the lens. i appreciate your responces.

Hope I'm in the right place...a friend of mine dropped her 300 2.8 VR & broke the tripod collar. Nikon in SA told her they don't stock the collar? Could anyone refer us to a place, even abroad that we can source this part?
Thanks a lot!
