OMD E-M10 MK3 - Inside of camera moves. Is this a fault?

3 years 8 months ago #695399 by rdh61
I purchased a nearly new OMD E-M10 MK3. I used my camera properly for the first time today. When handling it, I can feel that the inside of the camera moving when I tilt it from side to side (a slight knocking sound). When I take the lens off and look inside I can see the image sensor moving slightly as I tilt the camera this way and that. Is this a fault? I am wondering if I should send the camera for repair under guarantee. Should I? Thank you.

No. Do not send it in. Your camera is perfectly fine. The sensor has to move because it is equipped with IBIS. If you turn the camera on, the sensor will lock into position until it detects camera shake. If you turn IBIS off, the sensor locks into operating position but won't move. Once the camera is off, the sensor is free to bounce around again.

Your camera is fine, and there is no need to repair it. This occurs when the In-Body Image stabilization (IBIS) is turned off; it is pretty normal. However, when you turn on your camera, the sensor is located in the center by the electromagnetic force.
