Downloading from the VG-160

2 years 11 months ago #718008 by Sheila-Gazlay
I have an older Olympus VG-160 and it takes great pictures but I cannot get them downloaded. I have the right kind of cord which I connected to both the camera and my PC but my computer does not even recognize the camera. I know i's not my computer because I use drives regularly. Isn't it supposed to be just that simple to download pix? It is with my Kodak EZShare. I have Windows 10.

Thanks,
Sheila

G'day Sheila

Firstly - WELCOME to the PT photo forum .... there are plenty here with heaps of knowledge and skills ~ and who are willing to share with you

Windows is well known for (often) behaving like a teenager .... most of the time it behaves, but occasinally it sticks its heels in and refuses to play ball :p

If you have tried all "the usual" ways to upload, maybe you will have better success using a $10 USB-card reader device whereby you insert the camera card into the reader, then plug the reader into a USB port and let the computer take over from there (this is the way I have to do it with my Windows computer)

Once you have the images into the computer, then you can sort them into your "keeping categories" and albums so that you can easily recover them later

Hope this helps

First of all, I'm trying to download photos from the camera to the computer and I know this should work. I will try the reader device though. Thanks.

I don't know about the model of camera you have, but I know the Olympus cameras I have had take a special cable that looks just like a USB cable but it has some other stuff to it. If you don't have that Olympus cable, it won't work. It sounds like you don't have it. Olympus cables are not just standard connecting cables.

Thank you. Are you speaking of the cable that basically looks like it has a big... cylinder... in the middle of it? I have one of those. I'm trying to get a new one.

On later Olympus cameras, you have to go into the menu and set the camera to "storage". That gives you access to the card. You are better off with a card reader.

One thing I will add which you may already know is that this is just a tiny thing- almost pocket size. Would all of these suggestions hold for one like that?

Thanks,
Sheila

G'day Sheila

One of my cameras is a tiny 3x zoom Fuji which would squeeze into a cigarette packet ~ and it goes with me into many "tight corners". As with my Panasonic (bigger) cameras, the Fuji memory card is popped out from the camera and into the card reader for xmt into the computer

fwiw- my M.O. in Windows is
a) open the memory card file,
b) locate the DCIM folder (coz that's where the images are saved),
c) Select ALL then CUT.
d) then Into the My Pictures folder and into a folder I created called "todays photos" and
e) I then PASTE the card images into the "todays photos" folder

I can then view all photos full size, delete the duds, and finally move images into selected target folders (family / holiday / etc) so that I can find them again as needed

Hope this helps

Thanks. I was hoping to figure out a way to get to DCIM on my computer. At this point, I may get a new cord but am going to get a card reader also though I am not crazy about having to take the card out every time I want to download pictures.

G'day Sheila

I think you are correct on both counts - yes it sometimes is a pain to pop the card out (it certainly is on my small Fuji) -but- if you can get the correct cable, then it will also make life a lot easier for you

suggestion- never let Windows or the Oly software do the transfer of images automatically ... as you have no control as to where they go or in what order. Do it yourself and then you can decide which album (of your creation) your images finish up inside

Hope this helps
Phil
