Band photo conundrum

At a recent concert shoot I did, the headliner band, Disbelief (see the live photos in another thread here ), asked me if I could shoot some band photos for them as they recently had some members leave and new ones join and wanted to have updated photos.

This was not planned and as such I only had my camera with me, no extra lights, reflectors, background, etc. The venue was, like most places, poorly lit. It also was not really an aesthetically interesting venue, basically just a commercial building. We tried a couple of things but nothing worked until one of the band saw a hallway and thought it had a 'mental hospital vibe'.

Taking the photo was a challenge, mainly just because the lighting was not good. Editing it was a nightmare, to be honest. During editing I ended up with two versions: one very bright and clinical, the other dark and moody. I sent them off to the band, they're happy and struggling to choose.

So what's the lesson in all this? It's better to be prepared for all possible situations. I should have had more gear in the car because you just never know what you might need.

Another lesson is to just make the best of what you have at hand and take the shot. I had a photo that I personally didn't think was any good at all but the band liked it so much they can't decide between two versions of the the same photo.

1x1 format because of LP cover.

Second shot works for me, I like the darker gritty tones.  I think this works better for this band as well.  Nice work.

You managed well. Really good Post-production output. Love the low light shot.
