Troubleshooting Holga Light Issues

1 year 11 months ago #738306 by ScootyHoofdorp

I've been having issues with excess light on the left side of my Holga photos ever since I got the camera. The confusing part is that the issue is not particularly consistent. As seen in the attachments, sometimes it's very slight, sometimes it ruins the exposure entirely, and sometimes it's not there at all. I typically squeeze the camera closed while shooting and cover the window with my thumb. Since the issue is so inconsistent, I'm wondering if light leaks into the camera from the seams and/or the window are not the issue here. Could it be shutter related? Could it be film loading/unloading related? Any advice or suggested troubleshooting steps would be really appreciated. Thanks!

I had a friend who did art photography with this camera and have not seen anything like this.
The guys on ThePhotoForum are knowledgeable and more responsive. I'd give them a shot with this question.

After you load film in it, try taping along the seams with black electrical tape. Shoot a roll and see what you get. A little leakiness might be fun but this seems too much. It probably just gaps enough when you close it up that it's letting in too much light.

You might be seeing inconsistencies due to how sunny it is, time of day, angle toward or away from the sun, etc. Try maybe shooting in shade if it's real sunny, or even try early evening when you won't be getting so much direct light.

Holgas and Dianas can be such fun cameras. Try the Film Photography Project for info. and resources.
