Nikon vs Sony vs Canon RAW Photo Files

Like many of you, I'm a multiple camera brand owner.   Processing some images last night I was wondering are there any differences between the basic frame work of each manufactures RAW files?  or are these all fundamentally the same?

And speaking of post processing, do any cameras/manufactures apply any processing before that file is written to the memory card?

Canon 7D, 18-55mm, 55-250mm, 70-200mm L f/2.8, 100mm and 17-55mm f/2.8

Yes, there are very minor differences in raw files because there are minor differences in the sensors.  I wouldn't spend another minutes worrying about it, though.

No, raw means that the camera writes the data captured by the sensor to memory without alteration.  Your JPEG's, of course, will have alterations prior to being written to memory.

RAW files are proprietary. That's why the have different extensions. There may be major or minor differences in the data structures within, none of which is anything to be concerned about.

RAW means "raw". Unprocessed. It's the data, a JPG preview, EXIF, etc. Basic data.

I think the comments are correct, that the term is Raw or raw, meaning unprocessed. It is not an abbreviation or acronym like JPEG, which stands for Joint Photographic Experts Group (I think, I still have to look it up to double check since I can't seem to remember if it's photographic, or photographers, etc.)

My digital camera uses DNG (Digital Negative) which is a universal format rather than proprietary by any one company.

Invented by Adobe, and as proprietary as anything else. Wouldn't really call it universal. It's just open source and promoted for cross-platform use. And not really catching on, as far as I can tell.

We are reminded of this each time these guys have a new camera, and that cameras RAW files aren't compatible with Lightroom.

DNG is what many consider the new standard. Many aren't biting....

Why so serious?
