UV filter
These days it's just to protect the lens from sand/dust/rocks/fingers/dog tongues/water droplets.
Some people say they're optional. Some people always use them. I'm half half on the situation. I'll use them, but often I forget to put them on and some of my lenses don't have one on them (50 1.4 for example).
There's an argument that it will cause slight loss of IQ (image quality) and possibly flaring. However (apparently) if you buy a good quality one with fancy coatings on it, this problem is minimal at best.
So feel free to use one if you want. You can always take it off.
