Tips for taking candid shots of the public please

9 years 8 months ago #392659 by Paul-Watt
Hi all,
I've discovered that I really enjoy taking candid shots of people in everyday situations - sat waiting for a bus etc.
My issue I have is that I'm very wary of taking peoples photo without asking their permission first but as soon as you ask them if it's OK, the moment and the shot has gone.
The other issue I have is that as I shoot on 35mm, I can't just delete the photo if there's an issue.
Any ideas?

This is where a telephoto lens becomes your best friend! :-)

You do not specify where you are located, and that matters.

In the US, in public, there is no expectation of privacy (despite what some may think) so you can take all the photos you want. But you are correct that if you are noticed, the moment is gone. Even a telephoto lens won't help if you can be spotted.

That said, 35mm is irrelevant. Focal length is relevant.

Note that not every public location is public property. A shopping mall, for example, is private property, where the owner gets to make the rules.

Good point about location. I'm based in Portsmouth, England.
The reason I mentioned 35mm is that I know that deleting the photo off the camera has helped people in the past if there's an issue, I can't do that with film.
