Is it safe to be using normal household Q-Tips for this?

On the outside of the camera, yes.  I'm not so sure about any surfaces inside the camera.

Probably. But you might want to get into the habit of using a blower and Lens Pen.

I've used a rocket blower too, and use soft brushes made for camera lenses. If I use liquid lens cleaner I spritz it onto a microfiber cloth instead of directly on the lens. To clean the corners I'll fold the cloth a couple of times to get an edge to use.

If I'm out and about I'll breathe on the lens (which isn't supposed to be the best thing to do) and usually carry a microfiber cloth (if something gets on the lens, that or my shirttail will do! lol). Not recommended but in a pinch.

I'd use a blower inside the camera as Q tips can leave threads... As far as the rear viewfinder, they should be OK...
