I agree, that tamron has me tempted.

I've tried it before.  I was quite impressed to be honest.  It's a lens I will probably buy one day (when I feel the need for a long lens) unless something better is out by then of course.

I have owned both of these lenses. I sold the Sigma and bought the 100-400 and I am really glad I did. The only plus I can say for the Sigma is that its got the extra 100mm reach.
The Sigma is heavier, it is slower with the 6.3 aperture, it produces soft images as I recall at all focal lengths. The coating takes a beating and scuffs easier. NOTE : I have been told by another poster that Sigma has stepped up their game. I cant verify that though.
My copy of the Canon 100-400 is very sharp. As with most zooms it performs best in better lighting. Its not too heavy for me to carry around for hours if need be. The thing is very well made and that white coating holds up quite well. I use mine on a Canon 7D and it focuses real well in AI Servo and otherwise.
I would suggest you go with the Canon if you want the best quality. It costs extra because its worth it. And if you decide to sell it later you will find its resale value to be real good.

I had the Sigma 50-500 and it was OK but switched to the Canon 100-400 and have not looked back. The clarity and sharpness across the range is outstanding. Several of my friends here that do mostly wildlife have gone the 100-400 and the shots are amazing.

Would somebody tell certain people to stop whining about Tamron :catfight:

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

Who's whining?  It's awesome.

GO FOR THE TAMRON! YOU'LL NEVER WHINE ABOUT IT EVER (maybe).

Guy in this video recommends the Tamron over the Canon and Sigma.  Though he says the 400 5.6 is sharper and better, even with teleconvertors.

Saw this go by on FB today. Nice images, even if the light is crappy.

I've owned the Sigma 150-500. I used it mostly for birding. I found that shooting at 500mm the images were quite soft, about the same as putting a 2x extender iii on a 70-200 IS Canon L lens. I shot with both Canon 7d and 5d mk3. When shooting up close it was quite nice, but nothing my 70-200 couldn't do. With overcast skies you just couldn't get enough speed out of the lens with f/6.3 on my 7d.
