Tamron 70-200mm f2.8 vs Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 for Canon?

9 years 8 months ago #399341 by Joe Peterson
I'm on B&H's website and the Tamron is $1499 vs $1199 for the Sigma.  Both have nearly flawless reviews listed.  I always thought Sigma was the better of the two brands, but the higher price tag of the Tamron has me wondering if the Tamron is the better now?

Anyone please comment on this?   Thank you

You must consider the source.

Your perception will be colored by your shooting style, so pay attention to how reviewers are using their lenses.

That said, I shoot Nikon, but I don't think that affects the way the glass behaves. The Sigma is rather soft at f/2.8, but does well at f/4 or so. It's not terribly heavy, which is nice.

In my research, for Nikon, I consistently found the order being

Nikon VR II > Tamron > Nikon VR I > Sigma

After trying the VR II and the Sigma, it was pretty clear what I wanted/needed.  Sigma has some strong products, but is more consistently surpassed by Tamron. Again, it depends upon the lens.

If the Canon-mount Sigma 70-200 out-performs the Tamron, I'd be very surprised. There's a reason for the price differential.

Although I would guess Sigma at first, I've heard this about the Tamron 70-200mm lens, it's a winner

It's a hit or miss for each of these manufactures, but the 70-200mm Tamron is a nice piece of glass!

I think Tamron is way better!
I had the Sigma 70-200 and it had inconsistent autofocus, like all Sigma lenses.

I've heard nothing but good things about the new Tamron.

This is a blast from the past post.  Thank you all for jumping on this.  I ended up buying a Canon 70-200mm.  So neither of these.  But good to know for others I'm sure!

How long ago did you have that Sigma?  IMO the newer Sigma glass is far better than most Tamron and pretty close to OEM glass.

The Tamron in this instance is better.
