Post processing vs filters

9 years 7 months ago #401577 by The Original Daisy
OMG why do people still get worked up over trivial topics like this still?  I jumped on a LinkedIn group page that I follow from time to time and today there were a few people arguing over which was better.  That everyone needed to use "X" (I use X so this doesn't change direction of my post... keeping it neutral).

If someone wants to use filters, let them use filters.  If someone wants to do it in post, let them.  I think to many people get worked up over other peoples business.

Just my 2 1/2 cents!

I stay clear of these discussions, insidious topics do nothing good for your well being.

For me I say that post processing is good as a substitute for many of the filters that people buy. The only true exceptions are the Circular Polarizer, and the ND/GNDs. Any color, or effect filter can be duplicated in software. Anyone saying that you never need a filter, or that you need to use one, is plain peeing in others cereal.

I am willing to bet that those who insist on using real filters, never in post, are in the "I like to get it right in camera" crowd. It's not about results, it's about either pride or laziness. Results speak louder than words, and that's what I'd like to see instead of listening to a diatribe about what one should or should not do.

+1 on using a polarizer. Even an ND can be emulated with multiple exposures and combining in post.
