The Point Betsie Lighthouse and Break Wall on Lake Michigan

Any pointers for a newbie like me, if I want to take long exposures of waterfalls in day light? I suppose for a few seconds long exposure will throw lots of light into my lens and eventually there will be full light in the photo..

Hey thanks!! :silly:
For waterfalls a polarizer filter is a necessity. For one it takes the glare off the water and lets you see into the water rather than on the water. 2nd a polarizer will knock down 1 to 2 stops of light (depending on the filter) which will let you pull off anywhere from 3/4 to 2 second exposures at ISO 100 which is plenty long enough to get that cool silky effect on medium to medium-large waterfalls.
The ideal times to get these exposures are in the mornings and evenings when the sun is lower on the sky. If you want to get these exposures in the mid day, you will need Atleast a 4 stop neutral density filter to knock the light down enough to pull of the exposures you are looking for.

If you don't have any of these filters yet, Hoya will give you a good bang for your buck. They won't break the bank and are a pretty good quality. :)

Thanks!! An airport would be cool. Even a walk with the camera downtown would be cool! I like twilight or the "blue" hour. Good natural color still exists and it plays well with the warmer artificial lights that are normaly surrounding different man made structures. :)

Bring a flashlight too. You ca have a lot of fun with those.... That's what I did with my avatar photo :silly:

Thanks Karl for the detailed answer.

I dont have any of those filters so I would say, I will try to take such pictures in early morning or late evenings until I manage to buy such expensive filter. :)

No problem. I dont know if there are any limitations or drawbacks to dropping your ISO down to 50 or even 25 with digital (i have no experience with digital... But i can't imagine there would be) but you could try that too. That would slow your shutter speed down as well. You could always try overexposing (+) a stop or 2 which would give you a longer shutter speed and then you could try to bring the exposure back in post processing. Just a thought.

None of this will be possible without a tripod to steady your shot though...

I love Michigan lighthouses. I live near to the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse, which recently re-opened to the public.

I've been to Point Betsie, and it is wonderful. Here's a photo I took with another view.

Nice pic! I like the perspective.

I was actually on my way back from photographing the Pt. Aux Barques Lighthouse near Port Hope MI and stopped by the Fort Gratiot Light the same day they were doing the Grand Re-opening ceremony just a few weeks ago.. I hear they are going to have the Fort Gratiot lit up from the ground as well. That should make for some nice nighttime and twilight shots!

Interesting to see different photographer's pictures of the same place or subject with the different perspectives.

Some nighttime shots of these would be fun to see. Where ya been Karl?? - busy I assume, nice to see you posting.

Thanks.

I'm going to have to get up to Port Hope to have a look at that lighthouse. I love driving up on M29, which follows the coast. I was south of Port Huron today, hiking in St. John's Marsh. Great place...lots of red-wing blackbirds and swan families. I saw a white heron today, but unfortunately couldn't get a shot.

Hey Sharon. Yeah.... I've been super busy. 60-70hrs/week at work, home remodeling and even more garbage on top of that. lol. Oh well. I'm just thankful to be living and working. I'm a glass half full kind of guy. :D

I made the jump! I bought a Mamiya 7II (6x7) Medium Format Rangefinder with the 43mm ultra wide, 80mm, and 150mm. Also a Mamiya RZ 67 Pro II (6x7) Medium Format film camera with the 350mm APO lens. Cant wait to get out and see for my self how razor sharp these lenses are on that big negative. Everybody in the medium format forums and rangefinder forums talk up these lenses like they are the best lenses available for a medium format setup.

I hope to be getting back over here quite a bit more pretty soon.... but i have a busy couple months ahead of me. I'll be around a bit. Thanks for the "Hello" :) Hope you are doing well!

Nice! Get any photos of them?

Pt. Aux Barqeus is a super nice lighthouse. Definitely make the trip! It's not that far and you get some great light real early in the morning!!

Here's a couple of my shots from there. These are pretty old shots. Both shot on Kodak Royal Gold 25. I still have to pick up my film from processing from this last trip. I'll post them when i get them back.

Beautiful photos!

Heron...unfortunately no photos. I stalked it for quite a while, but it kept moving just beyond my range. I'm definitely going to try again.
