Would you build a photography website using Wordpress?

A big bone that I have to pick with Wordpress is how they show galleries of thumbnails. The standard gallery that comes with Wordpress is so simple as to be useless. Which forces you to thrash through the numerous plug-ins for photo galleries. To see what I mean, check out a trial page I am running now -

photographyintro.com/wp/?page_id=371

No one of these 3 plug-ins has all the features that I want. Click on a photo and you will see that the handling of the detail images is also a little different for each gallery.

Warning - this article is just started, so don't expect the content to make sense yet! I will take the next day or 2 to muddle through choosing one of the plug-ins, then delete the other 2 and finish constructing the article.

Kelly, I'm curious as to what you want? For me, the 3rd one is the most acceptable, if all the user needs/wants to do is look more closely at one image. The 2nd is by far the least friendly; don't take me to a whole 'nother page and force me to use my back button. Pop it up in another window, maybe, but lightbox is preferable. For the 1st one, ok, it does to a dedicated gallery page. Not sure why we need that if I can see the images from the initial page.

Oh, and for me, I dislike having to click specifically on the image to dismiss it (when in lightbox). I'm used to clicking anywhere off the image to make it go away. Or give me a "close" widget, or prompt me to click on the image to dismiss it. Again, that's just me.

Very good points Gary. I was surprised at the differences in how the various plug-ins handle the detail images. Which, for me, rules out the LazyestGallery plug-in (middle one). The one redeeming aspect of LazyestGallery is that it works exactly as shown by its control panels. I had a devil of a time getting that description under the 3rd image to show up correctly in the other two plug-ins. Lots and lots of trial-and-error, plus searching support forums. For a very casual user the LazyestGallery may be a good fit. But not so much for a serious effort.
