Mesa Arch

So I've been here enough times to capture the iconic sunburst on the horizon right at dawn. This time around I took a different approach, arriving later in the morning after the crowds left. The light was still terrific and the blue sky above lent some good contrasting color. Had anybody else captured this landmark in a unique light?

I've never been at all.  How bad are the crowds?

One of the best landscapes I've seen posted on this site in awhile.

I love the  . . .orange 'glow' ...would be nice to see a bit more of the 'rockiness'/texture of the underside ...surely a compromise of one or the other.

You can get some excellent texture and a very nice glow before the sun comes up. I was shooting in the tail end of the usable light here.

The crowds range from 2-3 devoted photographers in winter to up to 1000 people in the prime Spring/Summer months.

Wow!  I would never have expected to find 1000 peeps at such a remote site.

Yeah it gets bonkers, there's literally no standing room. Often you'll find the most extreme photographers camping DIRECTLY on the prime spot so they can get the perfect frame the following morning. Winter is a way better time to shoot both because of the lack of tourists and the positioning of the sun. Spring and summer the sun rises over the mountains and you don't get the most prime light. During winter, the sun rises over the actual horizon and you get every possible second of good light.

I took this back in November of 2012. I was with a terrific group of guys too. Everyone got a turn on "the spot" which is literally a 4'x4' spot where you can properly frame the arch.

The sun rises to the right of the mountains in the winter so you get a lot more low angle light.
