Nikon Speedlight SB-800

I am new to the Nikon family and found a good used Nikon Speedlight SB-800.  I am by no means other than an amateur who is trying to learn.  It seems that this is an awesome flash...which also raises my need for this post.  Because it is so awesome, apparently also means a manual that totally loses me.  I would like to start small, but get lost in the minutia.  For example, I believe I should be able to use it off camera whereby it triggers when my built-in flash on my Nikon D5300 flashes, but I cannot for the life of me find out how to do this in the manual.  Also, I would like to also just set it to an Auto mode, but again, hard for me to figure this out.  So, while I learn the camera (also not a fan of the camera's manual) and the flash, can anyone point me to maybe a simpler (for dummies) source of information to help me learn the camera and especially the flash.

The SB-800 only uses wireless remote control, not infrared. I don't think the D5300 supports wireless. Therefore, you can't do this with just the equipment you have. You'll need a wireless remote trigger system.

I'd suggest first learning how to control the flash while it's on camera, or, if you have a cable, slightly off-camera in your hand. Pointing the head to the ceiling and bouncing light, etc.  Working with TTL mode vs. manual. Lots to learn.
