Lion vs. Hyena

5 months 1 week ago #759422 by bryanpereira
These lions were with a buffalo kill when the hyenas started appearing.
They soon got tired of them getting too close and this scene unfolded in a few seconds.

I decided to exclude the most graphic pictures of the hyena ripping the lion's jaw.
It's on my site in the gallery if you want to see it as part of the set.

Curious though, I thought hyenas fought in packs?

Oh, absolutely! Hyenas are well-known for their pack behavior, especially when it comes to hunting and fighting. They live in large social groups called clans (go figure right), which can have up to 80 members. When they hunt or confront other predators, like lions, they rely on their strength in numbers. This pack mentality is not just about overpowering their prey or rivals, but also plays a key role in their complex social structure. So talk about being lucky here!

Hyenas are quite strange/funny, They dont really stick up for each other like a buffalo, elephants, etc. So they wouldnt come to help one another, if anything they would let the lions take one hyena so they could steal the kill unguarded. If a hyena come across a kill and doesnt alert others with his call they can be a fight once they come to the area

You are right in on all the action.  Intense photography! :beerbang:  Out of all the African animals, the one that has a sound that drives me up the wall is the hyena.  When I watch Nat Geo or Discovery channel, I'll mute the TV when these dogs start doing their yelping.

Another amazing photo.  How long are your days out there?  Must be so unpredictable at times?

If this played out differently would the lions have eaten the hyena?
