D5300

I have a D5000 and use it mostly for shooting running dogs. Get quite a few out of focus photo's from just out to delete type photo's. Been thinking of upgrading to the D5300. Shoot's more frames per sec so thinking it must auto focus faster. Is that a reasonable assumption? I do get quite a few sharp photo's, more than I though I would. Also I use a 55-300 Nikon lens for it. Would the 70-300 be a better choice. I notice most of my good shots are shot somewhere between 125 and just over 200 mm.

From my understanding looking at DP review is that the D5300 got the D7000s AF system. Neither have the 3D Tracking that would help you with shooting running dogs. You would be better off with the D7100 which has the 51 point AF system with 3D tracking. I use that with my D300 when I know I will be panning a lot, or shooting moving targets. The 70-300 VR would be a better lens though, as it would help you with some missed shots due to shake.  The only time that 3D does not work is head on of course, but that is why they make AF-C, but it will track the subject from top to bottom better in that case. I love the #D tracking when I need it. From what I read at DP the 5300 is not that much better for action shooting over the 5K.

Joves is correct. The D7100 would be my choice with your subject matter as well.....;)

Why so serious?
