Nikon D800 camera owners: Would you rather have the absolute best sensor or the sharpest lens?

9 years 7 months ago - 9 years 7 months ago #401676 by Ted Helm
I just got back from my Saturday morning photo meetup group and this subject created some debate among photographers.  Rather interesting answers and surprisingly it was nearly a 50/50 split in answers.  Now being a D800 owner I understand sensor, because that is why I bought the camera.  I do understand the importance of a sharp lens too.

Which leaves me to if you had to choice one or the other, which would have higher value to you?

For those who can't see the whole title:

Excsue me, but that's kinda a dumb argument. What's the point of having a great sensor if the image coming into the camera is sub-par?

I cannot believe what people will debate over these days. But for the sake of argument I will go with having the sensor first, and then getting the best glass later. You can get by with so so glass. But if you have great glass, and a crap sensor the resolving power of the glass is a waste. Well except for resale value. This is all of course if you were on a budget. If you have the money to blow then why settle for sub par with either.

Is this a trick question?  D800 has an amazing sensor, so all you need is good glass

Most lenses will out resolve the D800 anyway. Which is why we get moire.

So I'd say the better the sensor the better.

Was the D810 the official replacement for the D800?

What does that mean? It appears they're still selling both versions of the D800.

:agree:
Yeah I think it was more like the revision version of it over a replacement. This time they used a number designation over an X, or S. Who knows anymore what they are thinking when it comes to new models. Next they will start using the letters again on the 810 version. I think the designation was to separate it from 800, and some of the problems it had more than anything else.

Who determines what the best sensor and sharpest lens is? Pretty sure Canon people aren't gonna say a Nikon and Nikon people aren't gonna say a Canon.

Well I look back to my question and realize that I could have worded that differently.
