Comparison Nikon - Sony mirrorless

Hi,
A friend of mine is selling a Nikon D5300 for a really low price (and it comes with the tripod) but because I want a good camera to take to trips, it's kind of hard with a heavy camera, so I was thinking about getting a Mirrorless (like Sony NEX6). Which one do you guys think it's best?

Thanks!

That D5300 isn't really heavy at all...  I have several Nikon DSLRs that are all a lot heavier than that model. I also have an Olympus Pen EP-3 mirrorless that hardly gets used. It's kinda small for my hands & I had gotten an external EVF since it did not have one & I hate using the rear LCD to compose & focus. It doesn't work well for me with my macro shooting as I can only use either the speedlight or the EVF in the hotshoe, not both... Check out the features & hold one in your hands before plunking down the money for one.... Maybe an advanced point & shoot would suit you better.

Define "best"?

My D5100 is not heavy, for me. You may have a different opinion, and should base your decision on what works for you by holding the camera, working the controls, and considering your expectations with regards to usage and results.

A mirrorless requires  some compromises with autofocus as well.

So without knowing what you want to do with it, it's kinda difficult to even discuss relevant factors, much less make a suggestion. I will agree with Scott on one point: perhaps a point&shoot would be a better choice to get started.

If you will shoot action or wildlife, forget the mirrorless for now....;)

Why so serious?

If this was going to be my one-and-only camera forever, I would get the DSLR.  If I had no aspirations for "pro" photography, or I accepted that this camera will be just the first step in a succession of cameras (the fate that most of us have succumbed to) then I would give the mirrorless camera a try.
