Highest ISO used for photographing stars

11 years 10 months ago #231532 by Crammer
Hey guys, I've been doing some home work on photographing stars and many of the blogs I've read have recommended using the highest ISO you can when shooting stars. I'm using my 18-200mm lens at f/5.6 and when I did this, my photos were extremely grainy.

What am I missing here? Or is everyone dealing with the noise in post processing? I can't seem to find this addressed?

A starry night sky should be very dark, near black. So if the ISO is high enough that the sky is starting to lighten up, then that would be too much ISO.

no help Kelly

1600 would be fine, but you haven't stated your goal. Going to stack, star trails, EQ mounted, etc?
Here is a good read, and tons more info, just google......

Sorry about that, I'm trying to get photos of star trails. I have looked at some results on Google and thats where I'm getting messed up somewhere along the way. My shots are very grainy.

BTW, thanks for the input you guys!
