Charging a new DLSR battery overnight?

10 years 4 months ago #323093 by iTravel
One other question for me today. I just got a new battery in for my DSLR and no paper work came with it. I looked online for charging time, and I'm finding answers all over the place. Some say first time charge should be overnight, some say 4 to 5 hours. One guy stated to keep camera on with new battery in it till battery is completely dead, then charge for over night.

What is the correct way for charging a new battery?

Depends on what kind of battery. If you have a Lithium-ion, just plug it in and charge it up. More info here:

I've left my Nikon branded batteries on all night and most of the day many times. My charger tells me when they're done. I sometimes run them down, sometimes charge them with more than 50% left. I'm still using my ORIGINAL D700 battery, the one that came with my camera almost five years ago. Don't worry, use it, charge it and use it again...... ;)

Why so serious?

AN overnight charge is fine, The Lithium-ion is amazing at not developing a "memory".

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

:goodpost:

I can now tell my "know-it-all" neighbor to stop worrying about leaving his battery charging overnight.

That and the chargers are smarter, they stop charging when they get a feedback. On the Nikon when the light stops blinking it is done. And I have had some newer batteries set up a memory, but none of the camera ones have yet.

I always hear so much paranoia about charging batteries so this thread is a big help. I always charge things over night and for things like my laptop I never really let it run down in the first place.

I had to buy the first replacement battery for my D200 today. My D200 was in the first shipment of D200s. That's a couple months short of 8 years I think. I never worry about running the battery all the way down. I charge them when I know I'm going out. The second battery I bought when I got the camera is still going. I've charged both all day or overnight many times. If they will last nearly 8 years doing that, I'm not going to worry about how I charge them.

I was normally so tired at night, that leaving the battery charge on overnight was the last thing on my mind. Luckily I did not have to change my ways.

I don't think I have ever had a battery explode on the charger. That's the one good thing about modern day chargers, they practically do everything for you.
