Buying extended warranty on new DSLR. Good idea or waste of money?

Hey guys and gals.  I'm getting ready to make an investment in a new camera body and have noticed some offering extended warranties.  Have any of you bought a new camera and found the need of having an extended warranty?

The only extended warranty I have purchased was the Nikon Extended one when I got my D300. That is a two year extension from Nikon, and is not that expensive when you get it when you buy the camera. I thought about getting it for my D80 when it was near its one year expiration, but buying it from Nikon much later is more expensive. I never get store warranties for the reason that I got burned doing so once on a high ticket item. Also it depends on what body you are getting to me. On any of the Pro grade ones then I would say yes.

I never buy the extended warranty, but I shoot Nikon. If I were a Canon guy it would probably be important......:P

Why so serious?

Extended warranties are, in general, a source of revenue for the seller, with very little risk of having to pay out on it. There's a reason that everyone offers one.

Not to say that sometimes they don't end up in your favor, but for the most part, they serve no purpose.

So it's really about risk. If you don't handle risk of any kind well, get the warranty but make sure it covers every contingency, no questions asked. Anything less is rather pointless, don't you think?

I  bought a extended warranty once a number of years ago on a TV from Best Buy, needless to say, that wasn't good money spent.

My Camera Bag:

Canon 7D | 50mm f/1.2 | 17-40mm f/4 | 70-200mm f/2.8 | 320EX | 580EXII

LOL years ago we had a rear projection TV that had it's bulb blow so many times.  Luckily we had an extended warranty and could keep it for 5 years before paying for the bulbs cost too much.  Now we have had a HD plasma TV for the last 5 years or so.
