Auto focus went nuts when shooting model into the sun?

When ever I shoot a model into the sun, my lens auto focus goes nuts.  My lens hood is on, so I don't understand why this is happening?

Who cares?  Either A- prefocus on something downsun that is the same distance or B- switch to manual focus.

What focusing mode are you using?

My understanding: Auto-focus is based on contrast. If you are focusing on something bright then AF has nothing to lock onto, or at least, not enough. You camera can only work with what it's given.

You should be using spot focusing for this task, or don't shoot into the sun. Or do as Kelly suggested above.

Just use your AF lock or just go with manual focus

Switch to Manual and stay in control.
