TTL vs Manual flash

9 years 6 days ago #436273 by NickSano
With manual you have control and consistency, how do you feel about TTL?  I've been working on my flash skills and have been told TTL is equivalent to using the camera on "AUTO" mode.  It's good for those times you need to run and gun.

Care to share your opinion on this?

Simples:
  • On camera (or on flash bracket) - I use TTL
  • Off camera - Manual

I use TTL sometimes, but ALWAYS dial down the power in that or manual unless I'm filling something fifty feet distant....

Why so serious?

Learn manual. TTL is worthless as you still have to adjust, per the above comment.

I see it differently.  The "point and run" issue is not really an issue; I think TTL is fine for that.  Otherwise, I agree that learning manual is GREAT...very important.  However, I have some photos (even multiple flash) that I think worked with TTL.  So I like the idea of trying TTL first.  Why not...and then go manual if I have to.   (Maybe I'm just not good enough manual)

The problem with TTL is, when you introduce radio triggers, the reliability goes down the drain.  Best just to learn manual flash and be done with it.
