Possible to cross thread lens onto camera?

8 years 11 months ago #440052 by Sawyer
A friend left me a voice mail yesterday stating that he crossed threaded his 70-200mm lens onto his 5D.   I don't see how this is possilbe?  I left him a message to ask the details, doesn't make sense to me.

Have you heard of this happening?

Yes, I have, sort of. I was judging at a local camera club about 10 years ago when I was approached by a woman who had put her lens on by turning it in the opposite direction she was supposed to. It took me about 5 or 10 minutes to free it up and luckily without damage.

Most all current lenses are bayonet mount. Screw mount lenses haven't been around for decades. It is possible to mount a bayonet lens improperly if you don't line up the guides marks correctly though.

Not sure haw that can happen. He'd have to force the lens. There is no doubt if a lens isn't going on right.

You'd have to use more force than you should.

Anything is possible when dealing with people and mechanical devices. I have never done that particular stupid pet trick myself even with my first SLRs that had screw mounts. Those threads on those were coarse enough that it was pretty hard to do it. Well do it easily. Now over tightening them is another matter altogether.

That would be an expensive whoops!  Honestly I don't see how this would happen.

Well that is a first, looking at my camera and lens that is currently on it, leads me to believe they had to REALLY work hard at screwing up that mount.

I've cross threaded filters on lenses, but not filters onto cameras

 They must have been super rough to do that

Well, I've crossed a filter onto a lens once, but never a complete lens onto the camera!
