Sigma 1.4x DG EX APO Teleconverter vs Nikon 1.7x Teleconverter

13 years 3 days ago #55702 by Casey T
I'm looking to save a few bucks if I can. I'm after a teleconverter to get closer to the stars at night. I was told to stay away from 2X converters, and look at the Nikon 1.7. I have found a Sigma 1.4x that is much better priced. I was wondering if anyone had experience with this teleconverter? Comparison?

My Passion is being behind my camera and my family.

No experiance with teleconverter, but I'm not sure why you want to use one to take star shots. Use a telescope.

I had both at one time, now only the Nikon. The Sig wasn't bad, just a lot of lenses won't work with it. The Nikon 1.7 is pretty good, I use it mainly on mt afs300 f4.........:)
(not what you need for astrophotography)

Why so serious?

First off, I didn't know Sigma even made teleconverters, why won't those work with certain lenses where I'm guessing the Nikon will?

Sorry, there are Nikon lenses that won't work with the Nikon TCs also. Didn't mean to mislead. However, Sigma certainly makes them, and the copy I had was good....

A 1.4 TC won`t get you much closer to shoot the stars but if you have to buy a low price TC get the Kenko 1.4 pro which I uses.

Now can you use teleconverters on any lens?

I have a Sigma 70-200 and bought the Sigma 1.4 converter. It works fine but I had to buy a Sigma teleconverter to work with the Sigma lenses. from what I remember.

That depengs on the teleconvert & also on the lens. Since you shoot Nikon, by going to Nikon's website, you can find a table that lists which converters work with which lenses. You have to be careful as some lens/converters will not work & you can wind up damaging one or the other. Here's a link about the compatibility of current lenses/teleconverters

That's good to know. The next time I am searching to buy a lens, I'll check out Sigma...since it seems Nikon is a little pricey.
