Excellent work. I suspect timing and light are more difficult than usual, considering a lot of meets are indoor.

what are some challenges you faced and how did you deal with them?

Hey Troponin,

Out here, 90% of the meets are outdoors. Which, as you sorta noted, outdoor/natural lighting typically delivers more directional and changing light conditions. Sometimes, the lighting adds drama and sometimes harsh shadows, et cetera ... Yin & Yang.  You just have to deal with it.  Often, tough lighting, adds much more drama and can be more beneficial than than harmful.

Challenges of all sporting images is timing and being in the right place at the right time.  Swimming has an easy factor, unlike many other sports, as it doesn't have a ball, or puck, or shuttlecock ... Generally, for sports with balls, you gotta get the ball in the photo in order for the shot to be successful.  But with swimming, there's no contact and most of the body isn't visible ... so there's a small visual window for image making ... lowering the odds of making capturing something interesting and unusual.  Consequently, I went for very tight on most of my shots, leaving for Gestalt to fill in the rest of the picture.

I was a jock in high school and college, but swimming wasn't one of my sports. I still looked at the sport through my personal mental lens of an athletic. To my eye, it was all about water.  Water the the advisory and not the other team.  It was the water that surrounded you, held you back, stopped you from breathing and would ultimately drag you down.  That contest between swimmer and water was what interested me to capture.
