Photography Tip: Composition

Nope, not in the eyepiece. Just the 11 focus points and their little "[]" around them.

The "framing grid" you refer to is 16 squares. Not thirds. And it's only available in live view, not the viewfinder. I didn't even know it existed, and won't ever use it.

I do see that I need to clean my viewfinder and mirror, however.

I don't use live view either most of the time I use the eyepiece, unless I'm shooting into the sun for sunset/sunrise shots. Or macro shoots where the camera is down low and not practical to look through the viewfinder.

With regards to framing grid, if you imagine that the central vertical line and the central horizontal line is not there, you would get the lines of thirds (9squares) as I have highlighted in yellow of the attached file.

Uh, no. You get 25%/50%/25%, which is not the same. And yes, it's in live view, but again, on the D5100, not in the viewfinder. So kind of a moot point. Or, as Joey says, a "moo" point. (That's a reference to "Friends" for those not familiar with the show.)

I eyeball my composition. I've learned enough about where things go to know what I want. I also try to overshoot a bit to leave room for cropping and final adjustments in post.

In other words, we don't need no stinkin' grid.
