- Ask yourself if you’re a serious photographer and if you see yourself in future upgrading it to a full frame sensor camera.
- Technology is making it more affordable for everyone to own great quality dslrs. That means the cost of full frame sensor camera is going to drop in future making it more affordable for serious photographers. Nikon is already working on their entry level full frame camera Nikon D600.
- If you’re buying a really basic DSLR like Nikon D3100 or Canon T2i then chances are you’re not going to upgrade to FX camera body anytime soon which means you can get away with purchasing a DX format lens.
One of the hottest debates on photography forums has always included spending extra for the FX format lens. When we first start we’re not too familiar with crop factor or if the lens would be compatible with a full frame sensor camera or not. We’re only thinking about the present and over look where you may stand 12 months from now. In the beginning we want to spend the least amount of money to upgrade to a new lens. Sometimes this can hurt those who quickly develop great photography skills and want to upgrade to a full frame sensor camera like Nikon D700 or Canon 5D mark ii.
Here are some things to consider when purchasing a lens.
What happens if you do purchase a DX format lens and later you switch to full frame sensor camera? Well, it is going to vignette. You will see very dark borders. Some people say that you can crop that out but I feel that does not offer any solution because it will dramatically change your composition. What if you wanted to include something in the frame which now has been cropped? Don’t forget that if you crop you will lose resolution as well.
So if you are serious about photography and you see yourself upgrading it to a full frame sensor camera as they’re getting more and more affordable then I would highly recommend not to over look the format to save some money because in the end you will end up selling the lens and take a hit on it.
