Some say it takes more than 10,000 hours of doing something to become good at it. If  we're talking about photography, everyone should understand that the 10,000 hours should be spent experimenting and not doing the same things over and over again.

So what about photography clichés? Now, a cliché is an idea or an artistic element that has been overused to the point where it has become absolutely worthless. Photography has a lot of them. I don't know any photographer that isn't guilty of at least five or six.  But do they have any positive role? Well, every beginner should enjoy the thrill of turning a photo into black and white or partially desaturating it. HDR is also known to make rookies feel high. But as soon as you taking yourself seriously with those photos and start adding watermarks and signatures, you should have alarms going off everywhere around you.

The thing about photography clichés is that they're useful in the early days when you're just getting the hang of things, but that's it. It needs to stay there. If you're serious about evolving as a photographer , you need to stop shooting cliché shots that have been done by the past three generations of photographers. Period. No way around it.

You might  be surprised to find some of your favorite shots are clichés, but it's better to know the truth early on. You'll find the full 25 list in this video. Now the guys at DigitalRev have good humor, but they also tend to use some colorful language, so if you're the sensitive type, you might want to watch it on mute.
With that said, I hope from now on you'll start using your imagination for real photography. Have fun!
