The difference between a good photo and a great photo is that the later will keep the viewer’s eyes on it for longer. It will create a connection and possibly emotion and ultimately that is the goal of any photographer.

A great photograph is a dynamic one and it will challenge you to think and make connections between the elements in the frame. You will remember a dynamic photo for a lot longer than you will a dull one and this is science not just folklore.

(Success Tip:The easiest way to learn how to take portraits when you have little time to spare)

There are several ways of creating a photograph with powerful impact. It all starts with the photographer’s vision. Some say you’re either born with it or not, while others believe vision is the result of education and self-discipline. Whatever the truth may be, having vision and seeing things differently is crucial. It all ties up with composition because seeing differently means partly framing things in your mind and then using the camera to capture the photograph.

Linking several elements in a photo subtly is also a matter of skill. Whether it’s two people, two animals or two chairs, the connection between them will help tell a story visually and that is part of what makes a photo live.

Perspective plays a huge role in taking pictures with an impact and the tricky thing about is that it often takes just a few inches to the left or right to make the difference between good and great. But knowing when to move two inches comes after years of practice and some might say a sixth sense.

In this two hour workshop hosted by B&H, photographer Brenda Tharp will take through the most important means of creating powerful images. Enjoy!
