Winter cold nights better for astro photography photos?

7 years 5 months ago #506925 by Chris Briggs
I had a late night out and just getting in.  Before stepping foot into my house, I gazed up to the stars.  And had one of those moments, where I just looked in awe.  I noticed how clear it seemed and not to mention, how cold it was.

Is there a connection to clearer better sky's and cold weather?

So would there be less light pollution during cold weather because the moisture is not present?

Water content is not likely the effect. The cold weather pattern in your area may have included breezes that swept away the air pollution.

Cold air can have the opposite effect for a city. It may result in a strong inversion layer which traps pollution over the city.

Far to many variables to say yes or no.  You have light pollution is going to be in the air regardless whether water is boiling or frozen in atmosphere.

It can help, depends on humidity as well. Dew can form on the lens element, but you can prevent with a couple steps, like rubber banding a couple chemical hand warmers around lens, and leaving the hood in place.

Why so serious?

We have several telescopes and cold weather, tho not comfortable is the BEST way to view the night sky.  On those warm nights you have, what I call, thick air, humid conditions in the atmosphere moved by air currents make for wavy viewing. . Think of a desert and heatwaves you can see coming off the earth, or a highway mid summer you can see the heat waves. In winter under dark sky you don't have that issue.  even in my light polluted back yard cold nights are amazing.  Actually you can find out when your area is having a good night by using this www.cleardarksky.com/csk/  and plug your location and viola you know.
