When are you dialing in exposure compensation?

Call me a newbie, but I just don't see the need for this? If you want to make the photo lighter or darker exposed, why not just speed up or slow down the shutter?

That is true only for Manual mode. In all of the other camera modes the camera's AE will simply adjust the other settings to compensate for your change in shutter speed. That auto compensation then cancels out your shutter change, image will have the same brightness. Not everybody shoots in Manual mode only.

I shoot in manual a lot & that's what I do. Seems when I shoot in A or P & dial in compensation, I forget I have it set. That is until I blow a few shots before realizing it...

Same here, but I also don't find a lot of need for it too.

I use it all the time. I shoot in A (Av for Canon folks) about 99 percent of the time. Only time I shoot in M is when i'm using strobes or speedlights.

I shoot in manual pretty much 99% of the time so shutter and aperture are the EC. Having to use EC because one of the other Modes screws the pooch is primarily why I do not use them.

I don't use exposure compensation much at all, I'll make exposure changes in Photoshop
