Getting started in Digital SLR photography?

13 years 8 months ago #80 by PMurphy
When you made the move from a point and shoot camera to a digital SLR, did you take any classes, books, online classes?? What works best.

I don't have a SLR yet but am shopping around. Matter of fact it was one of my first questions here.

thanks for the advice.

Amazon is going to become your best friend. I would recommend "The Digital Photography" book series from Scott Kelby

Such a good book! I read the first 2 and think Scott Kelby really has a way with words. I hope to have some spare cash this fall to take a online course on photography.

Thanks for the replies! Please post up any books you can recommend. I'm going to buy that Scott Kelby book. What are some good online schools?

I read a ton of books and magazines. Many magazines will have some tips to share which makes for some good reading. There is a lot of information online of course too.

You know what, it really depends on how much time you have. If you have the time, I would suggest taking a online course or course on photography at community college. Other than that, keep investing in books!

Oh and if you have the funds, go to photography work shops!

On sale right now for $96. Not bad, curious on how much interaction do you receive from them? Did you take this course? My wife wants to get into photography and I'm not a good teacher. :silly:

At various places in the course you have to send photo's to the instructor who grades them and replies with comments, critiques, etc. Any time you need to you can e-mail the instructor questions that you might have. Other than that It's entirely self-paced.
