I love black and white photos they are my favorite, they are so timeless.

If your camera allows you to shoot your photos in RAW.
If your camera does not have the RAW capability shoot in color and convert on an editing program.
Shoot with the lowest ISO possible.
A low contrast situation is the best for black and white.

One essential to shooting in b&w is to learn to "see" in b&w - i.e., pay attention to tones, texture, contrasts, etc. and suppress the distraction of color when evaluating a scene. The absence of color makes b&w a more abstract medium.

In the old days of film I sometimes carried a Wratten #90 filter with me to look at scene and get a feel how it might look in b&w. I don't know how easy these are to find today but a sepia filter might do the trick. [Note: you don't put this filter n the camera - you hold it up to your eye to view the scene.]

I do a lot of shooting of live performances in very low-light with often weird color balance. I shoot RAW at a high ISO and often convert to b&w in post-production.
