Does your Nikon make sense to you? Do you like it?

Have you gone to a store to hold and play with the Canon? You may find that you don't like it, and Nikon is the system that works for you.

You might even find that Sony is a candidate.

You can get a great body, but you're going to need glass, too. And your budget doesn't allow for that. So you might want to re-consider your strategy.

Do you think a d610 would be a good option?

I think a used D610 or D750 would be a fine choice. Note that astrophotography is primarily about location and darkness (getting a good shot) and post-processing. Better low-light capabilities and short, fast glass are always good. I think there's a Rokinon superwide that is recommended.
