Studio Location Delima

I have been a photographer for 6 years now counting on craft for my sole support. However in this time, I have managed a studio for someone else, and worked independently, but free of a brick and mortar studio of my own. Now it is time, past time, to leave the nest. I am looking at opening a studio. My delima is this: Do I open the studio in my own town? or In a larger college community a half an hour north of me? Pros: The college area is a much larger population, and a younger population with over all better financial demographics. At home, I am better known, and a part of the community.
Cons: The college town has more competition, and a higher cost of doing business. My home town has a population of only 8K people, 2 photographers already deeply ingrained. It also has a lower mean income than the rest of the state. However, much lower cost of doing business.

I am sorta leaning toward the college area, but.......I do waver. Once the lease is signed....... I also have possible locations in mind for both areas.

Opinions welcomed.

In life there have always been those who make fire; but most just sit around the fire and enjoy the warmth. A great mind absent of action is waste.

Honestly 2 photographers for 8k people is already a lot.

I'd go the college option myself.

Oh and: "Dilemma". :)

I would consider the college area. We had several photographers in our town of 15K. One of the better known moved his business about 60km south to the north edge of a larger city and has done well.

Shoot, learn and share. It will make you a better photographer.

... lower mean income than the rest of the state ...

That would hold you back in the long run.

You did say the other town was only half an hour away. Is there a reason you can't find somewhere in the middle and be 15 minutes from both?

Honestly I would be in the college town in a heart beat, more competition or not. I think that is much better opportunity for you.

That's been on my mind as well, "choosing a location between the two.". Checking out some possible locations in the college area tomorrow morning. I am excited. And a little nervous.
Noting ventured nothing gained, I guess.
