going pro need recommendations

I guess you could say I'm a beginner. I had gotten a camera 2 years ago and taking pictures made me realize I enjoy photography and have decided that I want to be a professional. I'm looking to buy a new camera in the coming months and am looking for recommendations. I am looking at spending about $600 but am willing to go a little higher for a better camera. Something easy to use, will last a few years, have lens either with or that I can buy and reliable.

I am shooting a D80, and the D90 is the newer version, and for the price it is a great camera. But this all depends on what you currently have. If you have a Cannon with some lenses then Nikon would not be the way to go. If you are not yet on an SLR then I would go into a Ritz or similar store and just see how the Cannon and Nikon feel in your hand. When I did film only I shot on a Cannon A2E, and the difference between Nikon and Cannon is night and day. So it all depends on you preferences.
