Photoclub lighting

In our local photo club competitions we use an easle photo mount with lights attached at the top and bottom. It works great with landscape oriented prints but not for portrait prints.
It ends up not evenly lit - it looks too bright at top, dark at bottom and even darker at the centre. This compromises the picture on display.

I thought of the prints could be lit using a spotlight from about 50/60 foot (back of hall) a better and even illumination for the print.

In my opinion we are looking to use a spotlight (mains powered, tripod mounted) to light a print up to a max of 2 foot square from approx 50/60 feet, with a daylight temperature lamp - has anyone any encountered this kind of lighting condition? or what do other photo clubs or groups use?

Are you guys using flourescent lights? Maybe it's to close to your prints.

Yes, too close! Someone made set it up after an accident with the previous setup.

The flourescent tubes are fine, they just put it to close!

try using a slide projector as a spotlight, to light your prints on the easel. Just put in a blank slide, the mount it on the projector.
