Nikon 58 1.4G in 2020

4 years 2 months ago #678612 by Tom-Attridge
Having been interested in the Nikon 58mm 1.4G lens for a very long time, I finally came across a great deal on ebay (£660 for a mint copy with the option of returning within 30 days). I was prepared for the fact that the lens might be unusably soft, which is what I had been led to believe from a lot of the reviews I had read previously.

However, I'm massively impressed. For starters, on my D850 the lens required no focus adjustment, which again was unexpected from the reviews. Also, I was expecting the lens to feel more lightweight, as reviews had suggested it doesn't feel like a pro lens, but to me it has a rugged weight to it, similar to the other Nikon 1.4G lenses, which is great.

Its early days as I've only spent an hour at the weekend taking photos at a half marathon, but I can see it becoming a favorite. Image quality wise I think the soft reputation has perhaps come from the closest focus, where the depth of field is so narrow, but when standing back a few feet the lens is absolutely sharp even wide open. The out of focus areas are beautifully soft and unobtrusive. I have a pre-wedding shoot coming up in 2 days, so looking forward to testing it in more of an artistic capacity.

Would love to hear others experiences/views with this lens in 2020.
