Best off camera flash set up for Nikon D810

5 years 9 months ago #595329 by Gareth-Cottom
Hi guys,

1st post on the forum, i photograph a number of weddings per year and i feel im fine with natural lighting but ive been reading into off camera flash more and more and would like to use it a lot more to create interesting portraits.

I have had a look at what set up to use for my D810 but my head is mashed, does anyone know of a speedlight/transmitter/control system they use that works well for them?

Thanks in advance

Gareth

I don't own one, but the Yongnuo equipment gets lots of attention, as does Godox. And Adorama is teaming up with Flashpoint now. All modestly priced.

I now work with the A1 (x3) as standard with all my bodies
and combos. It is the system that gives me the most reliabi-
lity and pleasure to use. The SB900 (x3) was not bad either
in terms of reliability but the interface was not that high end.

If budget is no issue, go for the A1 or SB900. I got no opinion
or experience about anything else.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

I’ve tried several different flashes including the SB’s, Metz and Quantum. the SB’s overheat too quickly, the Metz 45 series is pretty good and works with the Quantum batteries, but the Quantum Qflash produces the best light, it doesn’t overheat, its Auto setting is dead on without the Qttl adapters. With the QTTL adapters it works fantastically. With the recently introduced Co-pilot, and the FreeXwire Wireless TTL controllers, you can wirelessly control several flashes from the camera. The only thing is Quantum Instruments has become a victim of the digital photo recession. It was recently bought out by Promark. It hasn’t introduced any new products in years. Metz has faired even worse, declaring bankruptcy last year. The Chinese made flashes are becoming popular, but they don’t seem to hold up, (you get what you pay for-sometimes). Quantum Qflash is a system that works well, even if it is becoming a little dated.
