MagBeam

So this season has been beating us silly with rain and cold weather. I have had very little time behind the camera as a result. It’s been about two months since I started shooting wildlife and have very few photos due to lighting. I am regularly shooting wide open at 1/400 on these days and still over 2500 ISO. (Max is set at 2500). The forecast shows no sign of it letting up for the next 10 days either.

So, I decided to be proactive. I hate sitting at home, so i ordered a MagMod/Beam and will give some feedback on it once I become familiar with its use. I follow several birding folks and it seems that few of them have good lighting solutions (one was using a Sto-fen for birds at 500mm, and he’s a professional).

Anyone have any interesting tips for me? I am going to mount it off camera with my gimbal and will start off on TTL just to see what it does. Other than that, I’m kinda of  just winging it, no pun intended. My greatest challenge will be finding a mounting solution, as most I have found to be terrible in general, especially in macro.

I'm sorry, just to clarify, are you looking to extend the range of your flash or defuse it?  Sto-fen only defuses the light.

Correct Ted…

and this is not what one needs of wildlife. For that, the
MAGBEAM WILDLIFE KIT is what you're looking for.

Light is free… capturing it is not!

Correct. That is the one.

I am still working on getting the flash off camera. It seems to create nasty looking catch lights with it top mounted. I had to put it on hold because I was working on too many projects at once and not getting any of them completed! This one is going on the back burner for now, but it seems like it will be a good solution

Buy it from somewhere that has a good return policy, use it, if it works as marketed, keep it.  If not, return it.
