Flash set up for photographing hummingbirds?

5 years 2 months ago #633890 by Nathan D
I want to get more bird shots this summer.  Particularly hummingbirds.  We have a few that I see around here each year.  Now when you guys are capturing these, are you setting up your flash on stands near feeding spots of these birds or do you have the flash mounted on a flash bracket above or attached to your camera in some way?

Any lighting tips would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any tips on how to attract more of these?

Hey,

when i was in Ecuador last year, I spend some hours in front of a feeding spot to get some shots. I set my flash (NW 880S) to full power and used HSS. Otherwise my a6300 is limited to shutter times up to 1/160s. Actually there was nothing really special I did, just be patient and wait till you get one of them in focus;) This shot f.E was taken at 300mm and 1/1000 Shutter time. The last shot without HSS at 1/160s.

Make: SONY
Model: ILCE-6300
Lens: FE 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 G OSS
ISO: 200
Aperture: f/5.6
Shutter speed: 1/160 sec
Captured: Fri, 7 Sep 2018 15:24pm

You really want the flash off camera whenever possible. A top mounted flash typically gives you a flat image. Mount it higher and camera left or right. There are adjustable arms you can use to attach it to your tripod.
