Nikon Telephoto Lenses on Z7II camera DX verses FX

1 year 2 months ago #749438 by [email protected]
I want to purchase a telephoto lens for my Z7II. The FX lenses are very expensive and large. I will be using the lens for occasional distant shots of nature or landscape. I see that DX lenses are smaller and considerably cheaper. I do realize that a DX lens has a significant crop, but considering the Z7II sensor is 45MP, a picture taken with a DX lens would still use about 20MP which should give a pretty nice picture. I know the DX lens will not be as good in low light but almost all of these picture using a telephoto lens will be in the day time.

Is my logic missing something?

As a newbie here - firstly a "Welcome" to the Forum -- you will find many here with similar interests to yourself

You are asking about using (what is essentially) a lens designed for an APS-sized sensor onto a Full-Frame sensor camera. Like some other things in life ... "possible but not a good idea"

As you already note - you will end up with a circular image that if / when cropped will result in a smaller (megapixel) image. I have played with similar lens activities in years gone by, and it soon loses its excitement

I would come back to the old saying "buy the best you can afford -- and it doesn't need to be a Rolls Royce in order to do what you want". There are plenty of 3rd-party lens makers and plenty of pre-loved alternatives for you to consider

Hope this helps

Have you considered buying used, like from MPB or KEH?  That way you can save a few bucks and still get the full frame lenses that have superb optics.
