Nikon mirrorless lenses on Nikon D800?

1 year 2 months ago #750483 by Sarah Ward
I don't have the budget for new camera body right now, so my D800 will need to do the job.  At some point would like to make the move to Z7 or Z9.  In the meantime will a Z mount lens work on my D800 with any sort of adapter?  If I'm buying new lenses, I would rather buy something that is a little more future proof.

Thank you for your help

Thank you for your help.

An adapter would be simple enough to make, but I doubt anyone will because, unless it had an image-degrading lens to provide infinity focus, it would only serve as an extension tube for close-up and macro work with a Z lens.

We need to pin this answer to the top of every camera forum. You can use DSLR lenses on mirrorless cameras but you can't use mirrorless lenses on DSLR's. The short registry distance for a mirrorless lens means the end of the lens would end up inside the mirror box of the DSLR. You could buy the cheapest Nikon body you could find to get started like a Z50 to use your newly acquired Z lenses on until you can trade it in on a Z7 or Z9. Otherwise, it's bite the bullet and make the leap.
