Best first lens for Nikon Z6 beginner photographer?

1 year 1 month ago #750565 by Opto Fox
Didn't see this Nikon thread.  I'm new here and just made a post in beginner forum about shopping for my first lens.  I bought a used Nikon Z6 camera and it didn't have a lens.  I was told a 50mm was a good lens to get from guy at a camera store called B&H Photo.   My girl friend said sales people will say anything is good and that I should ask on a photo forum, which is why I just signed up here.

If the 50mm lens isn't a good lens to get.  What would you say is a good lens for someone starting out?

Thank you for your help.

50mm is one of my most used focal lengths for the 36 x 24mm format - gives pretty much a natural field of view. Depending upon your subject matter you may later want to go wider or longer, but 50mm is good for starters.

24 x 120 is a very versatile lens and I would consider it. I think you should think about going that route but a 50 is cheap and very usuable, just not as versatile.

:agree:    very good point, and this will be a very good all in one lens, something you can use for a lot of applications.

I would go after a 24-120mm f/4 lens.  This will be a good all in one lens to have with you that will work in so many situations allowing your creativity to grow.

I think the first lens all photographers should start out with is a 50mm.  It makes you work for each shot.

True about the 50mm, but still if you have limited money, a good zoom is going to be best foot forward

5D Mark II | 50mm f/1.4 EX | 24-70mm f/2.8L | 70-200mm f/2.8L | 430EX

Just wanted to thank you all for the heads up on the 50mm.  I've been using the lens now the last couple weeks and granted, I'm just starting to play around with everything, it's working out for me.  Thanks again!

Only lens I had for my first 3 years was a 50mm, absolutely love this focal length!

I'm shopping around for my first 'real' camera as we speak.  Do you have any regrets for buying a used camera?  Do you still get a warranty, or how did you work around that?

Same lens that came with most cameras back in the day!

G'day OF

Speaking personally ... it will depend upon ones' vision > are you the sort of person who looks 'out there' and thus a good tele lens might suit; or are you the sort of visual who wants to include 'the whole world', thus needing a wide-lens??

For me from many decades ago, the 50mm was the most boring lens in the bag - I wanted a tele for my world

As to your friend / beginner of whom I / we do not know very much, perhaps a good zoom such as an 18-200mm would give them a good idea and starting point

Hope this helps
