Looking for a good DSLR that will last me through a 4 year college in photography. Hoping not to spend more than $2000 though. Any suggestions?

look in ebay and all the camera sites... you can get a DSLR under $2,000.

last me through a 4 year college in photography.

Ain't gonna' happen? No matter what you get you're going to want to upgrade in less than a year.
IMO, cameras are better than you are, so a used Canon xxD will work until you really have figured out what you need.

Good glass is more important & used ones hold their value well. Think about a 24-70 f/2.8; 70-200 f/4 0r 2.8; 85mm f/1.8 or 50 f/1.8 depending on how much $s you have left over.

Tripod. If you can't afford the best, then this is a great inexpensive one: Cheap tripod or cheap head ?

Two batteries, at least 1800 mAh.

Two 2GB CF cards. No! Not one 4GB card. Cards fail, & you don't want to lose everything from one shoot.

Something like this for aux light: Simple "every-day-emergency" location lighting
(Yes, it's not the latest & greatest, but you'll need at least two, & these just don't fail.) ;)

And add this to your kit, too: Need an exposure crutch?
Go to "post #47" for why I use it.

Have fun out there!

I'm with Photosguy on this one, spend your money on lenses. There is plenty to be learned even with an "older" camera. Anything with 6+ megapixels will probably be enough resolution to get good prints (when you actually need them) and won't set you back a whole lot of money. I would keep away from the more entry level dslrs (ie rebel series) as you may want some features they don't have. Canon 20D or higher should be fine (need a little help from the crowd on a Nikon equivalent). Buy a fast prime lens. Nothing has better for my composition than not having a variable zoom but having great control over my depth of field.

Agree with Photosguy, good glass is more important than the body. The body is important though, because photography courses will require a certain level of functionality. If you choose to go Canon, be sure to stay away from the rebels and invest into a "D" series Canon.

I agree. If you are going with Cannon or Nikon, get full frame lenses. They are a bit more expensive, but you will eventually be going to a full frame camera, and in the case of Nikon, you will get an ugly crop if you use a DX lens on a full frame camera, and correct me if I am wrong you cannon people, but I do not think that you can even use the lower lenses on a full frame body.

To start, if you are going to school for photography, and you are looking into Nikon, I would recommend to start out with the d300 or d300s, you can find them used on KEH for around $1000-$1200.

Im starting school to and I went with a Nikon d200 (referbished) it cost about 400 bucks which left me with some cash for lenses. The d90 is'nt to badly priced ether and can take most nikon lenses.
