How?

Maybe what I just tried. After seeing those pictures that were linked, I was curious to see what I can come up with, but I am afraid to actually toss my camera into the air. So I held onto the strap and let the camera go. I also just moved the camera around in my hand.

I'm thinking a camera suspended from a weather balloon and sent skyward would be a fun thing to see... Properly armored and with a parachute might be a safe thing to throw in. Can I borrow YOUR camera to try this with???

I'll be right back guys, I'm going to go tossing my camera up in the air, actually let me get a beer first. I'll juggle my camera and beer can and see what kind of photos I get.

So if they drop their camera doing this, you think their insurance company will cover the cost? Technically they could have an argument that it was done work related "to get the shot". I bet there are some bone heads that would try this too.

I don't think tossing your camera is extreme enough.

Lets set it to a slow shutter speed, and shoot it out of a cannon.

I think you could be onto something. Before you shoot out of cannon, you need to have polarized filter on the lens used.

This is all for show. The same results could be achieved by getting on step ladder.

Mike Larson is a wedding photographer who does the camera toss. He gathers the party into a circle and just tosses it up. He's gotten pretty good at it and has some excellent shots. There's a youtube video on it as well.

Same result can be done by building a rig, or using a ladder.

Throwing your camera and endangering thousands of dollars of gear when you can do it ANOTHER WAY ABSOLUTELY SAFE is beyond stupid.

Any ladder used with that wide of an angle of view would be in the picture. Regardless of that I can't imagine the logistics of building a good enough rig and then transporting that or a giant ladder to a shoot. Any professional has insurance and backup equipment.

No, no, no, NO.

Rigs are not hard to build. Cloning out a ladder takes seriously 8 minutes. You don't insure gear to purposely put it in risk like this.
