OK seeing as I do video professionally here's what I'd recommend (especially for a crop sensor HDSLR).

Cheap and best option IMHO is:
28 1.8
50 1.8

That's about all he'd need for 90% of the stuff. The faster lenses will let him blur the background more and for video stuff on HDSLR cameras a prime lens is generally better as you'll want it for set shots (especially if doing it on a tripod) and he'll probably want to move forward and back rather than zooming for that sorta thing.

Actually you know an old manual focus NIKON lens is pretty good (with an appropriate adapter of course). He can adjust the aperture using the control ring (D lens style) and the MF allows for more focus control (manual focus is needed/prefered for video most of the time).

Despite what a lot of people think, you do NOT need a super duper lens for video. The above lenses are fine.
